The Canadian DMCA: What You Can Do

The Canadian government is about to introduce new copyright legislation that will likely mirror the DMCA with strong anti-circumvention legislation – far beyond what is needed to comply with the WIPO Internet treaties – and address none of the issues that concern millions of Canadians. The Conservatives promise to eliminate the private copying levy will likely be abandoned. There will be no flexible fair dealing. No parody exception. No time shifting exception. No device shifting exception. No expanded backup provision. Nothing.

This video is about what you do about it.

    Under this revision …
Under this revision, for lack of a better term, of The Copyright Act, the cops could arbitrarily come into your home, sieze all of your devices and jail you if they think you have copyrighted material. EVEN IF YOU CREATED OR OWN IT. Under this stupid and ill advised farce you’d have to close down every school, library, media outlet and BAN THE INTERNET along with jailing EVERYONE IN CANADA because US industry is whining that we don’t have stiff copyright laws like them.

its so obviously that a TAX is for Big companie´s pockets;, so if Canada switch to open source, stop listen radio station, stop seeing TV, (actually you can see much better TV on internet) all of you will be unstoppable because they cant to obligate to a Nation to pay a TAx for an non-existent supossition (that all consumer are pirates and because we use CDS and DVDS burners with internet)

send a letter its not the way,
if this Jim Perruchi claims for taxes to copyrights, the thing to do is that Canadians have to switch to open source. stop listen the 40 songs chart and begin to listen new artists wich offers free songs on myspace, on lastfm,on reverbnation,, they are more great than a britney spears a metallica, a shakira, etc,

Agreed. What about libraries? Will we next be asked to pay to use a library?
This issue has more to do with the music and film industry and government in America than anything else. The Canadian government is being manipulated by US lobbyists and corporations to destroy our FREEDOM.
We need our government to start working how it was intended to, for them to listen to us and not us to them. The government has to hear us out and do what WE want, not what the US or the big corporations want!

    Canadian men and …
Canadian men and women should just stop buying all electrical devices that we would use for copying any material such as computers dvd recorders tape recorders, or any photo copy machines of any kind yes even mp3 players or ipods. hit the government in their pockets. purchasing any of these products we pay taxes on, and yet we will not be able to use them freely if bill c61 passes. will we be charged 500 dollars for singing, whistling, humming our favourite song?

I say if a person or group develops content and won’t release that content under terms that you find acceptable then pretend it was never developed and ignore the content.

Though, I do find copyright draconian, but I’m a thousand times as frustrated by our drug prohibition, our limits on original free speech (try questioning israel in public), our forcible state sponsorship of various industry cartels, our tax-at-gunpoint social programs, and other laws that I find authoritarian.

    What the copyright …
What the copyright act should be
    1. Only individuals can own copyright.
    2. When copyright holders die the copyright expires ten years later.
    3. Individuals cannot breach copyright unless they are significantly profiting financially from it.
    4. No more laws protecting business’ perceived right to gouge consumers.
    5. No more “terms of use”. You sold it. I bought it. It was yours, now its mine, and I can do what I want with it.
    6. Digital rights management illegal.

  25. smiley392781 Says:

    I went to the …
I went to the Online Rights Canada site and they have an easy link you can folow to send a letter to your MP. It is in the body of the article “Countdown to a New Copyright Bill”. It would be a shame if the bill gets through unchanged simply because the average Canadian is too busy to take an interest. Figures they would try to get it through at this time of year.
